Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace

One of the most iconic sights in the capital, the Changing of the Guard takes place outside Buckingham Palace – less than a mile away from the front door of B+B Belgravia.

The Changing of the Guard is the world-famous ceremony where the Queen’s Guard hands over responsibility for protecting Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace to the New Guard.

Consisting of soldiers on active duty from the Household Division’s Foot Guards, the guards are dressed in traditional red tunics and bearskin hats.

The colourful, musical ceremony is free to watch, lasts around 45 minutes and attracts visitors from across the world.

The Changing of the Guard is usually scheduled to take place at 11am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from August through to May, and daily throughout June and July.

However, the ceremony is currently suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic

following Government advice to avoid large gatherings and practice social distancing..

The Queen’s Guard is still in place outside the palace, but at the end of their stint the handover to the New Guard takes place without music or ceremony.
