Since 2011 London’s Millwall Park has been the epicentre of one of the largest cerebrations in the United Kingdom.  The London Oktoberfest has something for everyone: music, laughter and, of course, beer! It’s one of the most popular family festivities, and this year the number of attendees is expected to reach more than four thousand. But where did it all begin?

The glass is always half full

The story, as always, starts with a girl. In this case, it was the beautiful Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen who was set to marry Crown Prince Ludwig of Germany.  Prince Ludwig was later to become King, but before that day he gleefully tied the knot with his blushing bride. All the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the joyful day and in doing so, raised several glasses to toast the happy couple. The celebration took place on 12 October 1810 – from which some are still recovering. To this day, every October, we still celebrate the happy occasion, hence… Oktoberfest.

What’s happening?

Millwall Park, located close to the city next to Canary Wharf, will be a transformed into  Himmel (that’s German for ‘heaven’ in case you don’t know). Traditional, authentic German beer and food will be available and there will be several musical items.

A large tent furnished with long tables to be shared by everyone attending will house the festivity. Waitresses and waiters beautifully dressed in Dirndls and Lederhosen will be serving food and drinks in a relaxed family environment.
